How to develop self- respect?

Self-respect is a person’s respect (or disrespect) for himself or herself based on the objective merits and successes of the individual, or, conversely, in connection with guilt or mistakes. Self-respect is a model of paternal, demanding love towards oneself.

In translated works, “self-esteem”, “self-respect”, and “healthy self-concept” are used synonymously, although there are certain differences in the content of these concepts. While self-respect is primarily about dealing with oneself, self-esteem is more about the proper attitude of others towards a person.

Are self-esteem and academic success (more broadly, life achievements) related? There is no reliable data. Many researchers are convinced that self-esteem helps to improve learning, that self-esteem and self-respect are the armor that can protect children from failure (or from drug addiction and delinquency). However, other researchers do not rule out that the situation is diametrically opposite, and believe that academic success leads to high self-esteem, while poor school performance lowers self-esteem.

Often children compensate for their lack of self-respect and self-esteem by striving for good grades, but this does not mean that all excellent students have internal problems.

Self-respect is not given to a person from birth and is not directly related to the results of activity. More often, self-esteem is acquired by copying models, comes as a result of conscious or unconscious suggestions from others or as a result of training (education) by parents who teach the child to behave accordingly.
